DocFokus: Science Under Threat – a discussion on freedom of speech and journalistic responsibility

Please note that this event is held in Finnish

Popular DocFokus discussion events continue!
Without independent scientific research, there would be no developing Western democracy, profound understanding of history or the ability to envision the future, nor the current knowledge about health and well-being. The position of science is now being undermined all over the world. What happens when researchers become targets of pressure campaigns and attempts to silence them?

This panel discussion, organized in collaboration with the Union of Journalists in Finland, examines the relationship between independent scientific research and democracy, as well as the shared threats that freedom of speech, journalism, and science face.

Taking part in the discussion are journalists Mari Manninen and Adile Sevimli and researcher and non-fiction writer Tiina Raevaara. The discussion will be moderated by Salla Nazarenko, international affairs specialist for the Union of Journalists in Finland.

The event is free to attend, open to all, and requires no pre-registration. The discussion will be held after a screening of the film Blame at Kino Regina on Wed 4.2. from 6:30 PM–7:30 PM. Attending the film screening will require a ticket, which can be purchased from our website or any of our ticket sales points. See more information below.

DocFokus discussions are public discussions delving into topical issues. At this year’s DocPoint, there will be two DocFokus discussion events. In addition to the Science Under Threat discussion, another DocFokus discussion on freedom of assembly will be held at Kinopaltsi on Thu 5.2. in collaboration with Amnesty Finland.

Blame

Some context to the themes of the panel discussion will be provided by the film Blame, of which a screening will be held at Kino Regina on 4.2. from 4:15 PM–6:20 PM.

In this documentary by Christian Frei, we will follow three researchers who tried for years to warn the world of the threat of a new pandemic. When a pandemic finally broke out, they themselves were caught in the middle of a whirlwind and a geopolitical power game.
The film’s duration is 123 minutes and its age limit is 16. Read more about the film and buy tickets for the screening here.
