Rock Out

Are you familiar with the queer individuals behind the success of legendary artists such as the Beatles, Jimi Hendrix, the Who, and Bob Dylan? Are you aware of the difficulties faced by queer creators as they broke the boundaries of social norms at a time and in a place where homosexuality was strongly frowned upon, or even illegal?

Rock Out introduces some of the most influential figures in the music industry who struggled to fit into the culture they were actively shaping. In his film, Oscar-winning American writer, director, producer, and LGBTQ rights activist Dustin Lance Black connects the queer experiences of key figures in rock, punk, and metal music with the struggles of his beloved brother, Marcus.

Marcus never felt like he belonged to the community he loved most: headbanging, guitar-strumming, long-haired punk rockers. Was there ever room in this hypermasculine and heteronormative, yet paradoxically gender-bending and highly sexual world for the people who inspired them?

The influence of queer artists such as Little Richard, Elton John, and Freddie Mercury changed the world. But there are many whose names were left out of the history books. Rock Out examines the subject from the perspective of musicians, producers, managers, and fans.
