Redlight to Limelight

Showtimes

In Kolkata’s Kalighat red-light district, a new and unexpected force of creativity emerges. Redlight to Limelight follows CAM-ON, a film collective founded by sex workers and their children. Together, they write, shoot, and act in their own stories. Making films becomes not only a way to confront past pain and loss but also a path to joy, solidarity, and self-confidence.

Despite the restrictions of a deeply conservative society, the group continues creating and screening films, inspiring others along the way. For them, filmmaking is a means to break the cycle of sex work passing from one generation to the next and to survive a harsh, sometimes violent reality through art. Ultimately, the CAM-ON collective dreams of transforming the red-light district into a professional film hub.

The film guides the audience through daily life and creative processes, where reality and storytelling often intertwine. It balances the tragic realities of its subjects with the liberating power and joy of filmmaking, highlighting the significance of communal creativity.
