Located in northwestern Spain, Galicia is known for the wild horses that have wandered its mountainous terrain for centuries. They have a vital role in the prevention of wildfires, as they graze on the highly flammable vegetation, but their population is dwindling.
This beautifully filmed movie portrays the fight of both humans and animals against the devouring flames of the hottest summer on record. The fire is near, sometimes far, but always present.
The film follows a firefighter, a veterinarian, a 10-year-old horseman, and a family of farmers going about their daily lives. The animals, wild and domesticated alike, are also central characters.
The silver screen is filled with apocalyptic imagery of a sea of fire, smoke filling the air and everything turning to ash, forests burnt to the ground. According to an experienced firefighter, the forest fires have changed dramatically. They are more violent, more unpredictable and even sound different from before; they “roar”. And there are more of them as the climate changes. Animals and humans alike share the same fear and helplessness in the face of the destructive force of the flames.
