In Hell with Ivo
Showtimes
Art has saved the life of Bulgarian queer artist and songwriter Ivo Dimchev. Now he turns both personal and social suffering into uniquely intimate and norm-defying musical performances. At their core is the connection that forms between performer and audience.
Endowed with a gorgeous voice, Ivo explores sexuality, identity, and his relationship with religion and his family in his art. This documentary film directed by Kristina Nikolova follows Ivo’s journey from intimate home concerts to bigger arenas – during the pandemic he performed in people’s homes over 400 times. Occasionally the camera turns from the performer to the audience. ’Would you rather be in heaven with Donald Trump or in hell with Jesus Christ?’ Ivo asks.
Ivo lives unapologetically and on his own terms, even though the world behind him is rather conservative and narrow and his life stages are coloured by experiences of violence and hate speech. Ivo’s path also leads him to the United States. Could he find a space in which to live and breathe more freely in New York? In Hell with Ivo is an intimate, outspoken, even outrageous depiction of an artist upsetting the norm.
