How Deep Is Your Love

Showtimes

What’s hidden in the depths of the ocean? Like a gentle wave, How Deep Is Your Love carries the viewer into the unknown on a deep sea expedition joined by first-time feature film director Eleanor Mortimer.

The goal of the scientists is to name and classify organisms that humans have never seen before. Mortimer’s camera observes the seekers and their objects of interest with equal curiosity: people are part of an ecosystem, the research vessel functions as an organism,
“Homo sapiens” appears above the names of the interviewees.

How Deep is Your Love is a poetic logbook in which Mortimer disassembles the conventional forms of nature and science documentaries to create something new and compelling.

The stars of the show are the unbelievably beautiful organisms that could be from different universes. The scientists’ excitement is palpable, and it is impossible to not share their awe, even without prior interest in the subjects. One cannot help but be charmed by the
playful, tender tone of the film.

While the deep sea belongs to no one, its tempting riches are being pursued through deep-sea mining. Beneath the waves, the atmosphere is peaceful, while decisions on behalf of nature are made on dry land. Even scientific research can cast shadows. One is left to wonder: how deeply do we love nature and all of its wonders?
